Observation Narrative
This is one the narrowest (< 10 m wide) and steepest barrens on the south-facing slope of Buffalo Mountain. The herbaceous-dominated vegetation grades abruptly to closed forest on either side and extends < 10 m at the top and bottom of the plot. Conditions are extremely dry late in the 2004 growing season, but ephemeral seepage persists, especially at the top of the barren. A few clumps of Physocarpus opulifolius are present at the bottom, presumably because moisture accumulates there. Slope inclination seems generally to reflect bedding plane (but not dip) of exposed amphibolite bedrock.
Note: Location determined by GPS points collected from this barren 2003-09-10. GPS positions could not be collected when the plot was sampled.
